What is MIG / MAG in GMA Welding

GMAW
GMAW or Gas Metal Arc Welding is a welding process where continuously feeded filler wire itself is a carrier of welding current, which using suitable shielding gas, melts and is transferred to the work piece.

Appropriate shielding gas is very important to protect the weld pool from atmospheric contamination such as oxygen and nitrogen, which affects the weld pool by way of porosity and blackness.

MIG WELDING
Metal Inert Gas or MIG Welding is a process wherein usually Argon Gas (most common) or Helium Gas or a mixture of both is used as a shielding gas which does not react with any substance, hence does not affect the welding pool an any manner.
MIG welding is sometimes also called as Argon Welding. It is usually done on Aluminium, Stainless Steel, Copper and Copper alloy surfaces.

MAG WELDING
Metal Active Gas or MAG Welding is a process wherein usually CO2, a reacting gas, is used as a shielding gas which do react with the weld pool in smaller or larger extent to enhance the properties of weld pool.
MAG welding is sometimes also called as CO2 Welding. It is usually done on ordinary Mild Steel surfaces.

Advantages of GMAW

  • Economical due to high welding speed and because of continuous wire feed without any need for frequent electrode changing as in stick welding, hence no wastage of filler material.
  • Easy to weld in all positions.

IN SHORT, GMAW IS APPLIED IN CONTINUOUS WELDING JOB WHEREIN QUANTUM OF WORK IS HUGE.
